Our Beginnings

Strategically located on North Carolina's central coast, the Seafood Laboratory is a specialized unit of the NCSU Food Science Department. The laboratory represents NCSU's long-standing commitment to the seafood industry. It was among the earliest applied research seafood laboratories in the nation when it was founded in 1970.

Seafood production was just beginning its evolution into the major economic force it is today when Dr. Frank Thomas launched the laboratory with Sea Grant funding. The department's first seafood extension specialist, Thomas wanted to put NCSU's food science expertise at the doorstep of its coastal constituents.

This proximity helped forge the partnership between academics and industry that continues to thrive decades later.

Where We Are

CMAST is on the western edge of the Carteret Community College campus. Coming from the west on US 70, turn right on Banks, which joins College Circle. CMAST is on the waterfront to the right of this junction.
